Reading Rocks!
Reading Rocks!
Blueberry Pancake Publishing would like to introduce a new, fun activity for children and families. We are calling it Reading Rocks! Little Bear is encouraging little ones to read and have fun. He wants you to read not only his book... Excuse Me Sir, Do You Bark English? but he also wants you to read any other fun book you love and enjoy. Little Bear then wants you to enjoy a fun game called Reading Rocks!
Have you ever heard of Geocaching? It’s the world’s largest treasure hunt. I was introduced to this fun activity by my fabulous friend Wendy. She geocaches all over the world. I was lucky enough to go on a hunt with her in Germany. It was seriously a fun and exciting day.
After a visit with Wendy the other day, my mind started thinking about how much children love treasure hunts. I remembered seeing painted rocks on Pinterest and thought what a fun idea for little ones. I did a little research and discovered others are already doing this but that doesn’t mean we can’t start ours as well. This will be like a world wide hide and seek game with painted rocks.
Here are the steps to participate in Reading Rocks!
- Paint a rock. I’m thinking a rock about the size of your palm is a good size. There are ways to clean and prep the rocks. Simple washing or scrubbing with a toothbrush or some people get serious and use fillers to make sure the rocks are smooth. Use several coats of base paint before you paint your image and make sure to use several coats of sealer since it will be sitting outside in the elements until someone finds your rock.
- Paint anything you want on your rock or rocks that you are wanting to hide for others. I have started a Reading Rocks board on Pinterest if you are looking for ideas. Here’s the link to that board. https://www.pinterest.com/blueberrypancakepublishing/reading-rocks/ I think it would be super cute to make some of your rocks children’s book related. This is a great way to keep the children in the mindset of reading and thinking about rocks they will want to paint. Not feeling very gifted in the painting area. (um me) Try an easy to paint rock or even decoupage an image onto your rock. You can make as many rocks as you like. Also have your friends and family join in the fun. The more rocks made, the more rocks we can find.
- On the bottom of your rock, print out this label ...
READING ROCKS!
Post a picture of the rock

Keep or re-hide your rock.
You can decoupage the label onto the rock and make sure you seal it a few times to make sure it stays on the rock.

4. Once your rocks have been painted, keep them in a basket or box ready to go out the door with you when you go for a walk, to a park or even on a vacation to hide along the way. Hide them in fun, safe locations that are not too easy or too hard to find. Remember, we want to make this fun for the kids.
5. Worldwide? Yes! Little Bear and Blueberry Pancake Publishing has friends all over the world. This will be a wonderful way to connect us all and it will be fun to watch on Facebook where your rock has been found and traveled.
6. Safety tips.... Do not hide them in State or National Parks. Don’t hide them on or near a road. Try not to hide it near poison ivy (Remember... leaves of 3, let it be). Try not to make the rock too hard to find. We want children to be able to find them and hopefully in this century. Don’t attach anything like beads, google eyes or feathers that could fall off into nature and become trash in our communities.
This will be a great summer project and one that can carry us through the years. Enjoy and have fun!
